Expected Publication Date: Autumn 2027

Guest Editors: Michael Friendly, Michael Greenacre and Nick Cox

Introduction & Scope

In 1977, John W. Tukey published his seminal book, Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA). Rather than the classic mathematical inference and the passive data description omnipresent in statistics, this text emphasised active statistical learning, using visual display, robust indicators, and non-parametric data transformations. The idea was to let data speak for itself before applying formal statistical modelling.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Tukey’s revolutionary book, the Journal of Data Science, Statistics and Visualisation (JDSSV) invites submissions for a peer-reviewed special issue.

This issue focuses on the computational and visual evolution of Tukey's legacy. We welcome innovative research articles and software-oriented contributions that push the boundaries of data visualisation and computational EDA in the modern data science environment.

Recommended Computational & Visual Themes

We invite original research papers and comprehensive reviews focused on—but not limited to—the following topics:

  • EDA in retrospect and prospect: Which neglected ideas in EDA 1977 deserve rediscovery, reinvention and future use?

  • Visual Diagnostics for Machine Learning: Computational EDA frameworks built to explain "black-box" models, perform visual feature engineering, and diagnose residual structures.

  • Algorithmic Outlier and Pattern Detection: Computational and robust implementations of modern data summaries, dimension-reduction and clustering techniques, inspired by Tukey's ideas.

  • High-Dimensional and Scalable Visualisation: New architectures and algorithms for visually exploring high-dimensional data or massive data streams where classical graphs fail.

  • Interactive Graphic Environments: Advanced developments in plotting environments (e.g., in R, Python, Julia) and dynamic visualisation systems that facilitate fluid human-data interaction.

Submission Guidelines

All manuscripts must be submitted online through the JDSSV Submission Portal https://jdssv.org. When submitting your manuscript, please ensure you select the special issue option "Special Issue on Exploratory Data Analysis and Visualisation: 50 Years of John Tukey’s Legacy" from the journal's drop-down menu.

  • Format Requirements: Submissions must follow the style guidelines of the Journal of Data Science, Statistics and Visualisation, written in LaTex and using the journal’s LaTex template.

  • Code to reproduce the results presented in the paper and data repository links must accompany submissions to ensure compliance with the journal’s data and code reproducibility policies.

  • Review Process: All submissions that are accepted for review will undergo the journal's rapid peer-review process. The aim is to publish the special issue in the fourth quarter of 2027.
